Short description
The Toro cheerleading squad from Rancho Carne High School in San Diego has got spirit, spunk, sass and a killer routine that's sure to land them the national championship trophy for the sixth year in a row. But for newly-elected team captain Torrance, the Toros' road to total cheer glory takes a shady turn when she discovers that their perfectly-choreographed routines were in fact stolen.
What's left behind the scenes
- Vintage t-shirts featuring rock bands were taken from an extensive collection assembled by the film's director, Peyton Reed.
- Of all the cheerleaders in the squad during filming, only Kirsten Dunst, Rini Bell, and Brandy Williams were teenagers. Everyone else was over 20. The oldest was Gabrielle Union, at 27 years old.
- The film used the California State University, San Diego campus as the high school.
- The cheerleaders from the Toros and Clovers squads dance with bare midriffs, which is actually strictly prohibited by the rules.
- Scenes in the Toros cheerleading gym were filmed inside the Immaculate Conception Academy (a Catholic all-girls school) in San Diego.
- There is a ban on performing many program elements in school competitions that are used by girls.
