Vintage t-shirts featuring rock bands were taken from an extensive collection assembled by the film's director, Peyton Reed.
Of all the cheerleaders in the squad during filming, only Kirsten Dunst, Rini Bell, and Brandy Williams were teenagers. Everyone else was over 20. The oldest was Gabrielle Union, at 27 years old.
The film used the California State University, San Diego campus as the high school.
The cheerleaders from the Toros and Clovers squads dance with bare midriffs, which is actually strictly prohibited by the rules.
Scenes in the Toros cheerleading gym were filmed inside the Immaculate Conception Academy (a Catholic all-girls school) in San Diego.
There is a ban on performing many program elements in school competitions that are used by girls.
