The role of the persistent journalist was initially intended for Whoopi Goldberg, but director Joseph Zito later changed his mind.
Quite a few private houses were blown up and burned during filming. All these scenes were filmed in southern Atlanta, near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. These houses had been purchased for airport expansion and were prepared for demolition, and were vacant at the time of filming.
Following the film's release in October 1985, a book was published by "Pinnacle Books".
The film features a scene where Hunter and Rostov watch the classic 1956 science fiction film "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" on television, in which aliens attack America.
