What's left behind the scenes
- The original screenplay for Brian Duffield's film was included in the "Black List of the Best Unproduced Screenplays of 2011".
- Michael Fassbender was initially cast as Dan Frost, but he left the project due to a conflict with director Lynne Ramsay. Filming was scheduled to begin on a specific day, but Ramsay did not show up. Less than 24 hours later, Gavin O'Connor was appointed director, and work on the film proceeded according to schedule.
- Filming took place in early 2013, but the premiere was scheduled for February 2016, almost three years after filming concluded. During this time, actor Joel Edgerton wrote, directed, produced, and released the film "The Gift" (2015).
- The role of Jane was at one point intended for actress Karen Gillan.
- Bradley Cooper was initially cast as the main antagonist, but had to decline due to a busy filming schedule on other projects. Toby Maguire, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Tom Hiddleston were considered as replacements. Jake Gyllenhaal immediately rejected the offer to play the role.

The producers stated they would no longer seek $850,000 (or £512,000) in damages and the advance payment from the acclaimed director.
