What's left behind the scenes

The original screenplay for Brian Duffield's film was included in the "Black List of the Best Unproduced Screenplays of 2011".
Michael Fassbender was initially cast as Dan Frost, but he left the project due to a conflict with director Lynne Ramsay. Filming was scheduled to begin on a specific day, but Ramsay did not show up. Less than 24 hours later, Gavin O'Connor was appointed director, and work on the film proceeded according to schedule.
Filming took place in early 2013, but the premiere was scheduled for February 2016, almost three years after filming concluded. During this time, actor Joel Edgerton wrote, directed, produced, and released the film "The Gift" (2015).
The role of Jane was at one point intended for actress Karen Gillan.
Bradley Cooper was initially cast as the main antagonist, but had to decline due to a busy filming schedule on other projects. Toby Maguire, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Tom Hiddleston were considered as replacements. Jake Gyllenhaal immediately rejected the offer to play the role.
The replacement of Lynne Ramsay with another director led to Jude Law leaving the cast, stating that he had agreed to participate in the project only because of the opportunity to work with Ramsay. The role Law was cast in was to be played by Bradley Cooper.
This marks the first collaboration between Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor outside the Star Wars cinematic universe, and their fourth time working together on set. It is the first film they have appeared in together in almost 10 years. Natalie and Ewan previously co-starred in the Star Wars prequel trilogy as Padmé Amidala and Obi-Wan Kenobi, respectively.
Renowned cinematographer Darius Khondji left the project in solidarity with Lynne Ramsay.
Lynne Ramsay left the 'Jane Got a Gun' project (2016) just before filming began, following a three-day standoff with producer and financier Scott Steindorff in March 2013. Ramsay complained about the producer’s inappropriate behavior, who at the last moment attempted to impose an impossible filming schedule on her and simultaneously planned to exclude her from the final film edit. Ramsay stated that she had been promised something completely different and left the project. She was offered a salary of $750,000 plus bonuses (more money than she had ever received), but Ramsay left due to the inability to make the film as she envisioned, rather than as the producers wanted. In November 2013, Steindorff filed a lawsuit against Ramsay for breach of contract, but the case was settled out of court in March 2014. The producers stated they would no longer seek $850,000 (or £512,000) in damages and the advance payment from the acclaimed director.

Due to delays in the start of filming, Fassbender had to leave the project as he was already committed to filming «X-Men: Days of Future Past». Edgerton took on the role of Dan Frost, and Jude Law agreed to play Bishop, but later left the project.
Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, and Jeff Bridges were considered for the role of John Bishop.
The film «Jane Takes a Gun» is considered a very loose adaptation of the story told in «Hannibal Brooks» (1971). Here, the main character, whose husband has been kidnapped by bandits, turns to a former lover for help. In «Hannibal Brooks», a woman whose husband was killed by bandits and who was herself raped, turns to a lone gunman to ask him to teach her how to use a weapon.
Natalie Portman played the role of Jane Hammond. In the film «V for Vendetta» (2005), her character is named Evey Hammond, in «Thor» (2011) and «Thor: The Dark World» (2013) she plays a character named Jane Foster, and in «Closer» (2004) her character calls herself Jane Jones.
After several postponements, the Parisian premiere of the film at the «UGC Normandie» multiplex and cinema was scheduled for November 16, 2015, and the film was to be released nationwide in France on November 25. Due to the terrorist attacks in the French capital on November 13, both the premiere and a series of interviews related to the film's release were canceled. The release of «Jane Takes a Gun» was postponed to early 2016.
