Short description
In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex is assaulted by something no one could believe—a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the events that actually happened to the crew of the whaling ship "Essex," which sank after being attacked by a sperm whale in the South Pacific Ocean in 1820. This incident inspired Herman Melville to write the novel "Moby Dick".
  • According to Chris Hemsworth, the actors involved in filming were on a diet, consuming no more than 500-600 calories per day, in order to lose weight and look more believable in scenes where the ship's crew is starving.
  • This is the sixth film directed by Ron Howard based on true events. Previously, Howard directed "Apollo 13," "A Beautiful Mind," "Cinderella Man," "Frost/Nixon," and "Rush."
  • Some scenes of the film were shot in the Canary Islands. John Huston also filmed his cinematic adaptation of Melville's novel there.
  • Herman Melville himself never sailed on the "Essex." He was a sailor on the whaling ship "Acushnet."
  • In 2000, Barry Levinson began filming a cinematic version of the novel. Miramax was to handle distribution.
  • Before Benjamin Walker, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, and Henry Cavill were considered for the role of the captain.
  • Michelle Fairley, Joseph Mawle, Donald Sumpter, and Jamie Sives starred in "Game of Thrones" as Catelyn Stark, Benjen Stark, Maester Luwin, and Jory Cassel, respectively.
  • Cillian Murphy, Charlotte Riley, and Paul Anderson starred together in the British crime drama "Peaky Blinders."
  • The crew of the "Essex", which suffered an attack by a sperm whale, is trying to reach one of the islands of the Juan Fernández Archipelago. More than a hundred years before the events described, the same island served as a refuge for a certain Alexander Selkirk from Scotland, who spent several years there. His story was described by Daniel Defoe in the novel "Robinson Crusoe".
