- The film is based on the events that actually happened to the crew of the whaling ship "Essex," which sank after being attacked by a sperm whale in the South Pacific Ocean in 1820. This incident inspired Herman Melville to write the novel "Moby Dick".
- According to Chris Hemsworth, the actors involved in filming were on a diet, consuming no more than 500-600 calories per day, in order to lose weight and look more believable in scenes where the ship's crew is starving.
- This is the sixth film directed by Ron Howard based on true events. Previously, Howard directed "Apollo 13," "A Beautiful Mind," "Cinderella Man," "Frost/Nixon," and "Rush."
