The original script contained many fantastical scenes, for example, with a worm-man or zombies. However, they were removed by Richard Donner when he replaced screenwriter David M. Evans as director. Incidentally, the film's budget almost doubled after the change of director and exceeded 30 million dollars.
On the movie theater stand, you can see a poster for the film X-15 (1961), also directed by Richard Donner.
When Mike reads the postcard from Bobby, their last name – Wright – can be seen on it, just like the Wright brothers, pioneers of aviation.
