Short description
In 1937, during the height of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Imperial Japanese Army has just captured Nanjing, then-capital of the Republic of China. What followed was known as the Nanking Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking, a six week period wherein tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed.
What's left behind the scenes
- The original title of the film translates as “Nanjing! Nanjing!”
- Lu Chuanyu needed six months for Chinese censors to approve the film's script, and another six months to approve the footage.
- The film is made in black and white, although it was originally shot in color, but all the color was removed during editing. Cinematographer Cao Yu initially wanted to shoot the film on black and white film, but during testing he found that the negative from that film turned out to be too grainy, which he didn't like, and the producers ultimately considered black and white film too expensive.
- The original title of the film translates to "Nanjing! Nanjing!".
