The original title of the film translates as “Nanjing! Nanjing!”
Lu Chuanyu needed six months for Chinese censors to approve the film's script, and another six months to approve the footage.
The film is made in black and white, although it was originally shot in color, but all the color was removed during editing. Cinematographer Cao Yu initially wanted to shoot the film on black and white film, but during testing he found that the negative from that film turned out to be too grainy, which he didn't like, and the producers ultimately considered black and white film too expensive.
