Kurt Russell was flown to and from the set by helicopter every day so he could spend the night with his family in Los Angeles.
The map seen by the audience at the beginning of the film depicts the state of New Mexico. However, all the names have been changed, and none of the towns mentioned in the film actually exist in the United States.
The idea for the film came to Mostoy during a trip to Las Vegas with his wife.
Composer Basil Poledouris had to write the music for the film twice because the first version was rejected.
