What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is considered the first full-fledged horror film.
  • The name Caligari was taken by the screenwriters from Stendhal's correspondence.
  • The film's unique artistic design and sets were created by Expressionist artists from the Der Sturm group – Hermann Warm, Walther Ryrikh, and Walter Reimann, who proposed the innovative idea that films should look like living drawings.
  • To disrupt the film's screening in the USA, competitors of the distribution company even organized protest marches by war veterans with the slogan, "We will not watch films made by America's enemies!"
  • Initially, Fritz Lang was supposed to direct the film, but he was busy with another project by the time filming began. However, it was Lang who came up with the idea of framing the film's plot with scenes in an insane asylum, thereby radically changing its interpretation.
