- The name Caligari was taken by the screenwriters from Stendhal's correspondence.
- The film's unique artistic design and sets were created by Expressionist artists from the Der Sturm group – Hermann Warm, Walther Ryrikh, and Walter Reimann, who proposed the innovative idea that films should look like living drawings.
