A screen adaptation of William Wharton's novel.
Producers considered the borders of France, Germany, and Poland as a filming location before choosing Yuta to save money.
Filming took place during one of the coldest winters in Utah. At night, the temperature dropped below -30 degrees Fahrenheit during most of the shooting.
The interiors of the mansion were built in a local gymnasium. The attic was constructed on the site of the school's stage.
