Short description
An unemployed drifter, Eric Stanton wanders into a small California town and begins hanging around the local diner. While Eric falls for the lovely waitress Stella, he also begins romancing a quiet and well-to-do woman named June Mills. Since Stella isn't interested in Eric unless he has money, the lovelorn guy comes up with a scheme to win her over, and it involves June. Before long, murder works its way into this passionate love triangle.
What's left behind the scenes
- To prepare for her role, Linda Darnell (1923-1965) worked as a waitress in the studio cafeteria for a week.
- Before agreeing to appear in this film, Alice Faye (1915-1998) rejected over 30 scripts. She hoped this film would be on par with Otto Preminger's (1905-1986) drama “Laura” (1944). However, when she saw a rough cut of the film and realized that Preminger had cut most of the scenes with her character in favor of scenes with Linda Darnell’s character, Faye stopped the screening, drove towards the exit of the 20th Century Fox studio lot, threw her dressing room key to the security guard at the gate, and vowed never to work for 20th Century Fox again.
