Xavier Dolan wrote the screenplay for his film when he was 16 years old.
Some episodes in the film bear resemblance to the film “The 400 Blows” (a poster of which briefly appears in a scene).
Xavier Dolan financed part of the film's production himself, investing around $175,000. To complete the film, he also had to seek financial assistance from two Canadian state companies – Telefilm Canada and SODEC. He initially received rejections from both, but in December 2008, SODEC granted a subsidy.
