The premiere was scheduled for September 25, 2015, but Relativity Media (the US distributor) filed for bankruptcy, leaving the release date uncertain.
Director Mike Flanagan objected to his work being called a “horror film.” He preferred the terms “fairy tale” or “supernatural drama.”
Thomas Jane is known for playing Frank Castle in the 2004 film adaptation of the Marvel comic book *The Punisher*, directed by Jonathan Hensleigh. In 2008, Dash Mihok played the role of Martin Soap in the franchise reboot, *Punisher: War Zone* (directed by Lexi Alexander), and also appeared in *Somnia*.
The butterflies shown at the beginning of the film do not have antennae. All butterflies and moths shown after Cody's school friend draws antennae on the drawn butterfly do have antennae. This detail shows the strong influence that those around him have on Cody’s imagination.
