What's left behind the scenes
- The Italian producers of the film were so outraged by the plot that they forbade director Bernardo Bertolucci (1941-2018) from casting local actors, so the main characters had to be made American, played by Jill Clayburgh (1944-2010) and Matthew Barry.
- At one point, the director considered filming an explicit lovemaking scene between a mother and son, played by Jill Clayburgh and Matthew Barry respectively, but ultimately abandoned the idea.
- The film playing in the cinema where the protagonist and the girl find themselves is "Niagara" starring Marilyn Monroe.
