What's left behind the scenes
- Originally, it was planned that Margot Robbie would play the lead role, but she declined. Ultimately, the role went to Scarlett Johansson.
- Sam Riley auditioned for the role that Michael Pitt eventually got.
- Matthias Schoenaerts could have played Batu.
- The film was shot primarily in Wellington (New Zealand), as well as in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
- Most of the men's costumes were sewn by Rembrandt – the last and oldest costume maker in New Zealand.
- In one scene, Cutter hands Dr. Wellet an ampoule containing a red substance labeled C11H17N3O8. This is the chemical formula for tetrodotoxin – a potent poison of natural origin, found primarily in pufferfish. The most famous of these is the fugu fish.
- Initially, it was planned that Margot Robbie would play the main role, but she declined.
