What's left behind the scenes
- In this sequel, the piranhas have an ability they did not have in Joe Dante's film 'Piranha' (1978). Here, they have the ability to fly.
- Despite the title, the film does not feature piranhas, but grunion (a species of ray-finned fish from the atherinopsidae family).
- The special effects used to show the flying piranhas were later used by James Cameron for the newly born alien creature in 'Aliens' (1986).
- James Cameron was fired from the film because the contract required an American, but his name remained in the credits.
- When piranhas drag Gabby's son underwater, the wire pulling him is clearly visible.
