In this sequel, the piranhas have an ability they did not have in Joe Dante's film 'Piranha' (1978). Here, they have the ability to fly.
Despite the title, the film does not feature piranhas, but grunion (a species of ray-finned fish from the atherinopsidae family).
The special effects used to show the flying piranhas were later used by James Cameron for the newly born alien creature in 'Aliens' (1986).
James Cameron was fired from the film because the contract required an American, but his name remained in the credits.
When piranhas drag Gabby's son underwater, the wire pulling him is clearly visible.
