Short description
Kenny Wells, a modern-day prospector, hustler, and dreamer, is desperate for a lucky break. Left with few options, Wells teams up with an equally luckless geologist to execute a grandiose, last-ditch effort: to find gold deep in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia.

What's left behind the scenes

  • After reading the screenplay by Patrick Massett and John Zinman, Paul Haggis expressed a desire to film "Gold," but soon left the project. Haggis showed the script to Michael Mann, who also became interested, but he subsequently left the project to film the dramatic thriller "Blackhat" (2015). Spike Lee became the director for a time, but ultimately the film was directed by Stephen Gaghan.
  • For filming, Matthew McConaughey shaved his head, gained 20 kilograms, and wore dentures to look as unattractive as possible on camera. He gained weight by going on a diet of cheeseburgers with milkshakes and beer.
  • Stephen Gaghan's first film intended for theatrical release after the 2005 political thriller "Syriana".
  • When Michael Mann was briefly the film's director, the role of the protagonist was offered to Christian Bale.
  • In one interview, Matthew McConaughey called the role of Kenny Wells his favorite.
  • The magazine cover features the title "Fool's Gold." This was also the title of Andy Tennant's 2008 film, which also starred Matthew McConaughey.
  • The plot is based on the scandal surrounding the Canadian company Bre-X and the alleged gold deposit discovered in the Indonesian jungle in 1993.
