- The film's plot is based on a reboot of the popular computer game Tomb Raider (2013).
- MGM announced in March 2013 that it had bought the rights to the Tomb Raider game from Paramount. Paramount made this decision after the failure of the adventure action film "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life" (Jan de Bont, 2003).
- The new lead actress, Alicia Vikander, was a passionate fan of Tomb Raider games as a child.
- Before the role of Lara Croft went to Alicia Vikander, actresses Daisy Ridley, Emilia Clarke, Saoirse Ronan, and Cara Delevingne were considered the main contenders.
- After the release of Jan de Bont's "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life" in 2003, the lead actress Angelina Jolie publicly announced that she no longer wanted to play Lara. Alicia Vikander became the second actress to play the role of Lara Croft after Angelina.
- Kathryn Bigelow, Mimi Leder, and Catherine Hardwicke were considered for the role of director of the film.
- Daisy Ridley turned down the role of Lara Croft in favor of filming in the "Star Wars" franchise.
