Filming took place at Hohenzollern Castle near Hechingen (Baden-Württemberg, Germany). Hohenzollern Castle was closed to visitors from July 13th to 24th, 2015, for filming.
The sanatorium building is part of a former hospital complex. During World War I, many soldiers, including Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), were treated there.
The sanatorium building was filmed at the old clinic for the treatment of tuberculosis patients in Belitz-Heilstätten. The building and surrounding area were in disrepair for decades, after which everything was restored. A total of 750 windows (with a total area of 1,000 square meters of glass), 350 doors, 1,200 square meters of walls, and much more were replaced during the process of restoring the building's historical appearance.
The film was shot in Germany. According to the plot, it takes place in Switzerland, and the mountains in the distance were added during post-production using computer technology.
The book that the orderly reads in one of the scenes is Thomas Mann's (1875-1955) novel “The Magic Mountain” (1924). In the book, a young man comes to a sanatorium in the Alps to visit someone, but he is told that he is ill and needs to undergo a course of treatment there.
