The film is based on Paula Hawkins' novel 'The Girl on the Train' (2015).
Chris Evans was considered for the role of Tom and even began negotiations with the studio, but dropped out due to commitments to another project. He was replaced by Justin Theroux.
Kate Mara was cast as Megan but left the project. She was ultimately replaced by Haley Bennett.
Margot Robbie was also considered for the role of Megan.
Jared Leto was considered for the role of Scott, but he was busy with another project. He was replaced by Luke Evans.
Emily Blunt and Rebecca Ferguson both starred in blockbusters with Tom Cruise. Blunt appeared in Edge of Tomorrow (2014), and Ferguson in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015).
During filming, Emily Blunt found out she was pregnant with her second child. Strangely enough, this is the second time she has become pregnant while playing a character who is infertile.
