Short description
Set in the changing world of the late 1960s, Susanna Kaysen's prescribed "short rest" from a psychiatrist she had met only once becomes a strange, unknown journey into Alice's Wonderland, where she struggles with the thin line between normal and crazy. Susanna soon realizes how hard it is to get out once she has been committed, and she ultimately has to choose between the world of people who belong inside or the difficult world of reality outside.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the autobiography of Susanna Kaysen, who was sent for "voluntary treatment" to McLean Hospital in 1967.
- Rose McGowan and Claire Danes auditioned for the role of Lisa Rowe.
- Most of the scenes were filmed in a real psychiatric hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The hospital was closed in 2005.
- The quote that Dr. Wick (Vanessa Redgrave) delivers during her first session with Susanna belongs to the Roman philosopher Seneca.
- A possible translation of the original title is "The Girl Who Was Prevented."
- Jolie is very close to her brother James Haven. He often accompanies Angelina to various formal events. In one episode, Jolie asks, "Where's Jamie?", thereby mentioning her brother's name.
