Short description
As a young woman, Tristana is orphaned and taken under the guardianship of Don Lope, a respected member of the community, who takes advantage of his innocent charge. When Tristana falls in love with artist Horacio, she must learn to be more assertive in order to achieve independence from her nefarious guardian, or her blossoming relationship with Horatio is doomed.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to the film's director, Luis Buñuel (1900-1983), many distinctive traits of Tristana, including the habit of asking strangers to choose just one of two practically identical objects, mirrored distinctive traits of his own sister's character.
  • The film met with fierce resistance from the censors of the Francoist government of Spain. Buñuel insisted on filming the film as early as 1962, but the Francisco Franco regime (1892-1975) objected to the film's themes and ideas, which the autocratic and pro-Catholic government considered subversive. Scenes of Tristana's seduction and Don Lope's speeches against the church were absolutely unacceptable to the censors. The government's attention was also drawn to Buñuel's recent film, 'Viridiana' (1961). Buñuel had hoped that the release of 'Viridiana' would mark his return to his homeland, but the Francoist regime found it too subversive as well, and immediately banned it. It took the director another eight years to convince the censors and begin filming 'Tristana'.
