Short description
Housewife and mother Penny Chenery agrees to take over her ailing father's Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery - with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin - manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years.
What's left behind the scenes
- All the racing scenes in the film were staged, with one exception. When races are shown on television in the Tweedy house, these are archival footage from those years.
- Five horses played the role of Secretariat in the film. Most of the screen time was taken up by a stallion named Trolley Boy, who was chosen at a Secretariat look-alike contest in Kentucky. This same horse was walked down the red carpet in Hollywood at the film's premiere. All of Secretariat’s "doubles" were given special makeup – three white "socks" on their legs and a star with a stripe on their forehead.
