What's left behind the scenes

  • All the racing scenes in the film were staged, with one exception. When races are shown on television in the Tweedy house, these are archival footage from those years.
  • Five horses played the role of Secretariat in the film. Most of the screen time was taken up by a stallion named Trolley Boy, who was chosen at a Secretariat look-alike contest in Kentucky. This same horse was walked down the red carpet in Hollywood at the film's premiere. All of Secretariat’s "doubles" were given special makeup – three white "socks" on their legs and a star with a stripe on their forehead.
