The film is based on Isadora Duncan's book "My Life" and Sewell Stokes' "Isadora Duncan: An Intimate Portrait".
During the filming of the dance scene in the theater, with unsuspecting extras playing the audience, Vanessa Redgrave did what Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) once did herself. She ripped off the top of her dress and danced topless. The extras were caught off guard, and this achieved the reaction of a completely shocked audience, which is what director Karel Reisz (1926-2002) wanted to capture.
Vanessa Redgrave spent six months learning to dance in a style similar to Isadora Duncan's.
