Colin Straus and Greg Straus independently financed the film, without seeking funding from any studio.
The appearance of many alien ships is indebted to various cloud formations – from stratocumulus to cumulus.
Practically the entire film was shot in a building where one of the directors and producers, Greg Straus, resides, located in Venice, one of the districts of Los Angeles.
The film utilized over 1000 special effects.
The entire $10 million budget went towards computer graphics; approximately $500,000 was spent on filming the movie itself.
Sony Pictures filed a lawsuit against Colin Straus, Greg Straus, and the owners of Hydraulix Films, who had previously been hired to produce special effects for the thematically similar film "Battle: Los Angeles" (2011). Sony claimed that Hydraulix had not informed them that the company was working on a competing project. The case was later dismissed.
