• The idea for the film was inspired by an interview with Bishop Carlton Pearson on the topic of one of the episodes of "This American Life." Interviewer Ira Glass became a producer of the film.
• At one point, it was assumed that the film would be directed by "Oscar-winning" Jonathan Demme ("The Silence of the Lambs" – 1990, "Philadelphia" – 1993), but due to constant delays in starting work on the film, Demme moved on to another project. Joshua Marston took his place as director.
• Due to tax incentives, the film was shot in Atlanta and its surroundings in the state of Georgia, although the plot is set in Oklahoma.
