The idea for the film was inspired by an interview with Bishop Carlton Pearson on the topic of one of the episodes of "This American Life." Interviewer Ira Glass became a producer of the film.
At one point, it was assumed that the film would be directed by "Oscar-winning" Jonathan Demme ("The Silence of the Lambs" – 1990, "Philadelphia" – 1993), but due to constant delays in starting work on the film, Demme moved on to another project. Joshua Marston took his place as director.
Due to tax incentives, the film was shot in Atlanta and its surroundings in the state of Georgia, although the plot is set in Oklahoma.
