Casey Affleck's directorial debut (full name – Caleb Casey McGuire Affleck-Boldt), brother of Ben Affleck.
The opening scenes of the film are a reconstruction.
The speech with which Edward James Olmos addresses Joaquin Phoenix was written by Casey Affleck himself.
This is impossible to understand from the film itself, but rapper and music producer Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs approached filming the movie with unprecedented enthusiasm. It took only one meeting and conversation with Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck to persuade him to play himself. All scenes with Combs were improvised.
In the scene of defecation on the sleeping Joaquin Phoenix, a mixture of coffee grounds and compost was used instead of feces, delivered through a tube attached to Anthony Langdon's back. The scene was filmed after approximately 35 takes.
The film ends with Joaquin Phoenix and his father drinking beer. The role of the father was played by Casey Affleck's father.
In the initial version of the film, the scene where Joaquin Phoenix travels down the river was almost 3 minutes longer, but Casey Affleck decided it was too much.
