- The film is based on the autobiographical book of young amateur climber Aaron Ralston, who one weekend in 2003, without telling anyone, went to his favorite canyon. By a cruel twist of fate, he stumbled and fell into a crevice.
- Filming took place both in Blue John Canyon, in the very place where the incident occurred, and on a soundstage, where an exact replica of the crevice in which the protagonist found himself trapped was made.
