Aaron Ralston did indeed keep a video diary while he was in the canyon. The recording was shown only to Ralston's close relatives. Before filming "127 Hours," Danny Boyle and James Franco were allowed to view it.
The film accurately recreates the set of equipment that Ralston had at his disposal on that unfortunate day.
The film is based on the autobiographical book of young amateur climber Aaron Ralston, who one weekend in 2003, without telling anyone, went to his favorite canyon. By a cruel twist of fate, he stumbled and fell into a crevice.
Filming took place both in Blue John Canyon, in the very place where the incident occurred, and on a soundstage, where an exact replica of the crevice in which the protagonist found himself trapped was made.

When the main character, played by James Franco, falls into the canyon and his arm gets stuck in the rocks, director, screenwriter, and producer Danny Boyle ordered him to be filmed for 20 minutes without a break, during which time he demonstrated a wide range of emotions. Only after that did Boyle order the camera to be turned off and the footage to be edited, which made it into the film.
In the crevices and among the rocks in the canyon set, James Franco hid textbooks, which he needed as a means of combating claustrophobia, inevitable on the tiny set where he had to spend many hours.
Special effects supervisor Tony Gardner dedicated a significant amount of time to preparing the amputation scene and consulted with doctors. A day and a half was allocated for filming the scene at the very end of the shooting period. Danny Boyle managed to capture everything needed in a single long take (lasting 20 minutes in real time) on the first attempt.
