• The film's logo is stylized after the Metallica logo, and some of their songs are also featured in the film. All of this happened with the group's approval.
• According to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the traits of Hesher’s “personality” were largely inspired by the personality of Cliff Burton (1962-1986), the bassist for Metallica.
• In one scene, Hesher berates TJ and refers to a man who raped elderly women. He was referring to Albert DeSalvo (1931-1973), better known as the “Boston Strangler.”
• During TJ’s argument with his father at dinner, TJ knocks over a glass of milk onto the table. A moment later, in another shot from a different angle, the glass is full again.
