The film's logo is stylized after the Metallica logo, and some of their songs are also featured in the film. All of this happened with the group's approval.
According to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the traits of Hesher’s “personality” were largely inspired by the personality of Cliff Burton (1962-1986), the bassist for Metallica.
In one scene, Hesher berates TJ and refers to a man who raped elderly women. He was referring to Albert DeSalvo (1931-1973), better known as the “Boston Strangler.”
During TJ’s argument with his father at dinner, TJ knocks over a glass of milk onto the table. A moment later, in another shot from a different angle, the glass is full again.
