Short description
Purehearted teen Lazzaro is content living as a sharecropper in rural Italy, but an unlikely friendship with the marquise’s son will change his world.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Adriano Tardiolo, who played Lazarus, was accidentally discovered in the upper grades of a school in the city of Orvieto. This happened after over a thousand young men of his age had auditioned. Adriano had never acted in films before. He was convinced to take the role by the director Alice Rohrwacher herself.
  • The film is based on a real story that caused a scandal in modern Italy. The owner of significant land holdings in a remote area kept her peasants unaware that the sharecropping system had long been abolished in the country (sharecropping is a form of land rental where the rent is paid to the landowner as a share of the harvested crop).
