Adriano Tardiolo, who played Lazarus, was accidentally discovered in the upper grades of a school in the city of Orvieto. This happened after over a thousand young men of his age had auditioned. Adriano had never acted in films before. He was convinced to take the role by the director Alice Rohrwacher herself.
The film is based on a real story that caused a scandal in modern Italy. The owner of significant land holdings in a remote area kept her peasants unaware that the sharecropping system had long been abolished in the country (sharecropping is a form of land rental where the rent is paid to the landowner as a share of the harvested crop).
