What's left behind the scenes

  • Robert Rodriguez participated in the work on the film as a second director, but concealed his name in the credits.
  • The name of the new species of cockroach – Judas – is interesting. It is known that Judas betrayed Jesus, just as the cockroaches do in this film.
  • Filming took place in Los Angeles and in the old subway at the 'Dilancey Street' station in Toronto, which was closed back in 1966.
  • The length of the film after final editing was 2957 meters.
  • Stricker's disease, from which the children in this film suffer, is actually "autosomal dominant arthro-ophthalmopathy" – an inflammatory eye disease.
  • Conflicts regularly arose on set between director Guillermo del Toro and producer Bob Weinstein, who often visited the set and demanded scenes that were not in the script. They have not worked together since.
  • Initially, the film was conceived as one of 30-minute novellas within a feature-length film. Ultimately, these three novellas evolved into two full-length films — “Mutants” (1997) and “The Outsider” (2001), and a short film “Love Triangle” (2008).
