What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by Polish writer Bolesław Prus.
  • The film was shot in Egypt, Uzbekistan (Kyzylkum Desert), and Poland.
  • There was never a pharaoh named Ramses XIII. After the death of Ramses XI (XII), Herihor became the new pharaoh.
  • In the scenes of the pharaoh's troops' military maneuvers, Soviet soldiers served as extras.
  • In the film scene depicting a solar eclipse, it is shown that the pharaoh and priests of Ancient Egypt knew about the spherical shape of the Earth and the physical nature of eclipses.
  • Two scenes were cut by censorship in the Soviet distribution: the ritual killing of an Assyrian warhorse by the Egyptians and the procession of Egyptian warriors carrying severed hands of Libyan rebels in baskets.
