The mother of a severely traumatized daughter enlists the aid of a unique horse trainer to help the girl's equally injured horse.
What's left behind the scenes
- The 'horse whispering' – is actually a misnomer. Native Americans would sometimes bite a horse on the ear to make it stop kicking. Some observers mistakenly assumed the rider was whispering something to the animal.
- Natalie Portman turned down one of the leading roles in this film. Instead, she chose to play in "The Diary of Anne Frank" on Broadway.
- Actor, producer, and director Robert Redford broke a toe during filming when a horse accidentally stepped on him. Shortly afterward, Sam Neill also accidentally stepped on the same foot, and the ensuing argument slowed down filming by a couple of months.
- Lucas Black turned down an offer to star in this film because it required him to alter his pronunciation.
