The 'horse whispering' – is actually a misnomer. Native Americans would sometimes bite a horse on the ear to make it stop kicking. Some observers mistakenly assumed the rider was whispering something to the animal.
Natalie Portman turned down one of the leading roles in this film. Instead, she chose to play in "The Diary of Anne Frank" on Broadway.
Actor, producer, and director Robert Redford broke a toe during filming when a horse accidentally stepped on him. Shortly afterward, Sam Neill also accidentally stepped on the same foot, and the ensuing argument slowed down filming by a couple of months.
Lucas Black turned down an offer to star in this film because it required him to alter his pronunciation.
