- Diane Kruger, Eva Green, and Noomi Rapace were initially considered for the role of Gretel.
- In an interview at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Famke Janssen stated that she agreed to the role of the witch leader because she needed to pay off debts. Janssen repeatedly mentioned, starting in 2007, that she was preparing the film "Bad Mommy" (2011), where she debuted as a director/screenwriter. The film's funding and distribution experienced difficult times, partly due to the 2008 economic crisis. Moreover, she had barely appeared in any films during that period.
