Initially, it was assumed that Matthew Lillard would simply lighten his hair for the role of Steve. During the procedure, however, hydrogen peroxide burned the actor's scalp, leaving a scar. They only managed to hide it by dyeing his hair blue.
The apocalyptic landscape that appears behind Sandy during her conversation with Steve was "borrowed" from James Cameron's action film "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991).
