The original script by Frank Norwood was not to the liking of the film's producers, and they brought in a then virtually unknown Quentin Tarantino to make significant changes to it. Rutger Hauer had no objection to the original script, he disliked the revisions made by Tarantino, and he insisted on filming according to Norwood's script. Eventually, a compromise was reached – Norwood's script was followed when it came to Hauer's lines, while Tarantino's script was used for everything else, including the lines of the character played by Natasha Richardson. Norwood insisted that he be credited as the sole author of the script, so Tarantino was listed in the credits as an associate producer.
