What's left behind the scenes

  • By ‘Central Station’ in Brazil, people usually mean the main railway station in Rio de Janeiro, which connects this metropolis with other major cities in the country. Its full name is Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil.
  • All scenes of the film were shot in chronological order.
  • When actress Fernanda Montenegro set up her table at the station, strangers began approaching her with requests to write letters for them, just as it happens in the film itself. Some of the footage shot during these moments was included in the film.
  • When Dora comes home and watches television, bought with the money from the sale of Jozue, a popular Brazilian television program called "Willing to Do Anything for Money" is on.
  • Vinicius de Oliveira received a role for which 1500 young actors auditioned.
  • Walter Salles, upon arriving at the airport, saw a boy who wanted to shine his shoes, but he refused, as he was wearing sneakers. Then the boy asked for money, but Salles refused again. Salles offered the boy an audition. He initially refused, saying he was very poor, had never acted, and hadn't even seen a movie, but Salles persuaded him. The boy’s name was Vinicius de Oliveira.
