Short description
Pacific Rim is set in a near future where enormous creatures called Kaiju have risen from the ocean and waged a war that has cost millions of lives and exhausted the planet's resources. Humanity's answer is the Jaegers: giant robots piloted by two people whose minds are linked through a neural bridge. When even these machines prove inadequate against the unrelenting attacks, the defenders of Earth turn to an unlikely pair, a washed-up former pilot and an untested trainee, to operate an older, legendary Jaeger. Together they become the last line of defense against an approaching apocalypse.
Guillermo del Toro directed and co-wrote the film with Travis Beacham, and produced it with Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. It is the eighth of the thirteen films he has directed, arriving between Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Crimson Peak. Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi lead the cast as Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori, alongside Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr. and Ron Perlman. The production, from Legendary Pictures and Double Dare You Productions, cost about 190 million dollars and took roughly 411 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 557,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.9 from about 13,800 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 295 reviews places it close to those audience scores.

- The idea for the screenplay came to Travis Beacham while walking along the California coast on a foggy morning. The pier appeared to him as a creature rising from the water, and the screenwriter imagined a large robot waiting on the shore to fight it.
- While making the film, Guillermo del Toro drew inspiration from the anime and tokusatsu of his youth. Despite this, he wanted to avoid references to other works of fiction in terms of the design of the robots and monsters. Del Toro was also strongly impressed by Francisco Goya's 'The Colossus' and Hokusai's 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa.'
- "Kaiju" is a Japanese word that literally translates to "strange beast." It is commonly used to denote giant monsters in Japanese science fiction films, such as those featuring Godzilla.
- A full-scale robot cockpit was built at Pinewood Studios in Toronto. It weighed approximately 20 tons and was about four stories tall. It was constructed on a massive hydraulic rig that moved, shook, and vibrated as if it were actually controlling a robot. A smaller, gimbaled version was also built to allow for a range of movements. The visual effects team used some footage from this cockpit to reference during the creation of the robot animation. And to depict the interior of each robot differently, the set dressing was completely changed.
- The Gipsy Danger robot was painted and detailed to resemble a World War II fighter plane in appearance.

- Filming began on November 14, 2011, in Toronto and continued until April 2012. The film was shot using RED Epic cameras.

- When the Wanderer falls from space, it's raining on Earth. It's visible when showing the army, but when the Wanderer lands, the rain is gone. Throughout the entire scene, the rain appears and disappears.
