Short description
A British multinational company seeks to overthrow a vicious dictator in central Africa. It hires a band of (largely aged) mercenaries in London and sends them in to save the virtuous but imprisoned opposition leader who is also critically ill and due for execution. Just when the team has performed a perfect rescue, the multinational does a deal with the vicious dictator leaving the mercenary band to escape under their own steam and exact revenge.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on Daniel Carney's novel "The Thin White Line" (later published by Corgi Books under the title "Wild Geese").
- Burt Lancaster hoped to get the role of Janders, but was unable to participate in the filming due to being busy with another movie.
- Mike Hoare, a well-known participant in the fighting during the Congo Crisis, served as a consultant on the film. He was invited to participate by his former subordinate, Ian Yule, who was also a mercenary.
- Relatives of producer Euan Lloyd appeared in the film: his daughter Rosalind Lloyd and his wife Jane Hilton.
